Wishes

by Robin Munro

Another summer’s leaves are falling,
a mother calls them ‘heaven-sent’:
‘if you catch one, make a wish,
it might be granted, let’s pretend.’

Wishes are secret, but the child believes
he shares her wish:  don’t let this end
may our moments be forever.

Let’s pretend
